On April 9, 2010, Major Randell D. Voas gave his life defending our freedom as a CV22 Osprey Aircraft Commander executing an emergency landing while on a Special Operations Mission near Kandahar, Afghanistan. A native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Randy was a graduate of Eden Prairie High School and the University of Minnesota. During high school Randy was an avid runner, and he participated in Cross Country, Nordic Skiing, Track & Field, Band, Boy Scouts, and National Honor Society.
At the time of Randy's death, his classmates were planning the EPHS Class of 1985 twenty-five year reunion. In conjunction, a group of his friends decided to create a 5K run in his honor, so Randy's Run and the subsequent scholarship for EHPS Seniors were born. Each Memorial Day, we gather at the Eden Prairie Veterans Memorial to have fun with friends and family and remember Randy; to award scholarships to deserving EPHS seniors, and to increase awareness of the contributions men and women make every day to keep this country free.
Each year, Randy's Run awards scholarships to deserving Eden Prairie High School seniors who have participated in the activities Randy Voas participated, and who demonstrate his values. To date, we have awarded $32,000 for scholarships. In addition to supporting local high school graduates, Randy's Run donates a portion of the race proceeds to Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
“With each passing year since Randy’s Run was founded, we have been blessed to honor our classmate and share his story with the Eden Prairie community. What started as grief and honor for Randy’s ultimate sacrifice has blossomed into a celebration of all men and women, along with their families, who serve to protect our country. I could not be more pleased with how this event retains the history of Randy’s Run while incorporating new ways to give back to our men and women in the military."
1985 EPHS Grad and Former Randy's Run Board Member
“Randy was one of the first classmates I met when I moved to Eden Prairie at the end of 8th Grade. As soon as I heard that a group of my classmates had created Randy's Run in his honor, I knew that I had to participate, first as a runner, and subsequently as an organizer. I'm thankful to Randy for his service, and ultimately giving his life, and I'm thankful that our organization can honor him by giving back to our community.”
